FAQ
Valuation Questions Owners Ask Us.
How much does a business valuation cost?
A valuation summary is free. The full self-serve Express Valuation Report is $499, and the appraiser-prepared Essentials Valuation Report is $1,500. Professionally prepared engagement reports start between $3,000 and $8,000 depending on the report and the size and complexity of the business. The $499 and $1,500 reports are credited toward future engagement fees, and the Business Readiness Assessment is credited in full toward a sale engagement within 12 months. Machinery and equipment appraisals and Quality of Earnings reports are priced by scope; call or schedule to discuss.
Which valuation report do I need?
It depends on what the valuation is for. If you're curious, start with the free online summary. If you're preparing to sell, the Business Readiness Assessment is prepared by your advisor and looks at your whole business, not just the financials. Lenders, buyers, and complex structures call for the Standard Valuation Report, and legal, estate, or partnership matters require the Certified Valuation Report. If you're not sure, ask us and we'll point you to the right one, even if it's the free one.
How long does a valuation take?
The online summary starts in minutes and moves at your pace. The Essentials and Standard Valuation Reports are delivered in 6 days or less after submission, and the Certified Valuation Report in 4 weeks or less. Timelines for the Business Readiness Assessment depend on the size and complexity of your business, and we give you a timeline when we scope the engagement.
What information do I need to provide?
Financial statements and tax returns do most of the work, along with details about your operations. The online reports walk you through a guided, step-by-step intake where you enter and upload everything yourself. For engagement reports, we help you gather and organize what the appraiser needs.
Are the online reports as thorough as the appraiser-prepared ones?
No, and they are not meant to be. The online reports use structured methodologies, real market data, and your own inputs to produce a solid estimate, and they are not intended for legal, tax, or formal regulatory purposes. When the valuation has to hold up to a lender, a court, or the IRS, that is what the certified reports are for.
Will anyone know I am having my business valued?
No. The online reports are completed privately by you, and engagement work is handled confidentially. Nothing you share is disclosed without your written consent.
Do the report fees count toward anything else?
Yes. The $499 Express Valuation Report and the $1,500 Essentials Valuation Report are both credited toward future reports or advisor engagement fees, the Business Readiness Assessment is credited in full toward your engagement if we take your business to market within 12 months, and the CIM Preparation fee is credited toward the closing commission. Nothing you spend finding out where you stand is wasted.
How is FairExit Advisors paid when I sell?
Our fee has two parts. A success fee is earned when your business sells and is paid at closing, so we are rewarded for the same outcome you want: a completed sale at a fair price. An engagement fee, paid up front, varies with the scope of work needed to prepare the business for sale. Assessment and business valuation costs may be credited back at the closing of a successful sale. We walk through the exact structure before you sign anything.
