The best exits are decided years before the sale, when there is still time to build the value, prepare the owner, and choose the buyer. Exit planning is that work, done on purpose instead of under pressure. It is where most of our relationships with owners begin.
Most owners think about selling as an event: one day you decide, a few months later you close. In practice it is a process, and the price a buyer pays is set long before the listing by things that take time to change: how dependent the business is on you, how predictable the revenue is, how clean the books are, how much of your revenue comes from one customer.
The numbers say most businesses are not there yet. In Value Builder's Q2 2026 benchmark of more than a thousand owners, the median readiness score was 56 out of 100 and only one business in a hundred reached 80, the level associated with premium offers. Fifty-eight percent of those owners plan to exit within five years. The gap between those two facts is what exit planning closes.
Started early, it also changes what the sale can be. An owner who plans has options a buyer cannot take away: a full sale, a partial sale that takes risk off the table, a handoff to family or a manager, or simply the freedom to keep going with a business that no longer needs them every day.
Where Every Plan Starts
A good exit rests on three readiness questions. Each has a free assessment that takes a few minutes and returns a scored report. Most owners find one of the three surprises them.
The Path
Start wherever fits. Each step stands on its own, and none obligates you to the next.

When you are ready
The person who helped you build the value takes the business to market, so nothing has to be explained twice and the buyer meets a company that is ready for them.
How Selling Works →Most advisors see one part of an exit: the accountant sees the tax, the attorney sees the contract, the broker sees the buyer. A Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA®) is trained to see the whole of it at once, the business, the owner, and the owner's finances, and to plan the exit as a process with a timeline rather than a transaction with a date. FairExit Advisors is led by a CEPA® who also sells businesses, so the plan and the sale are handled by the same hands.
The Business
Value drivers, owner dependence, recurring revenue, concentration, clean financials: what a buyer will pay for and what they will discount.
The Owner
What you want the exit to make possible, what role you are willing to play afterward, and what life looks like on the other side.
The Money
What the sale needs to net after tax and expenses, working alongside your CPA, attorney, and financial advisor rather than in place of them.
Readiness assessments and program tools are provided through The Value Builder System™. FairExit Advisors does not provide tax, legal, or investment advice.
FAQ
Exit planning is the work done before a sale, on purpose instead of under pressure: building the value a buyer will pay for, preparing the owner for what comes after, and choosing the kind of buyer and deal that fits. It treats the exit as a process with a timeline rather than a transaction with a date.
The best exits are decided years before the sale, because the drivers a buyer pays for take time to change. Most owners we work with in a structured program are one to five years from a sale. If you are closer than that, the free assessments still show you where you stand today.
No. An owner who plans has options a buyer cannot take away: a full sale, a partial sale that takes risk off the table, a handoff to family or a manager, or the freedom to keep going with a business that no longer needs them every day.
A Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) is trained to see the whole exit at once: the business, the owner, and the owner's finances. FairExit Advisors is led by a CEPA who also sells businesses, so the plan and the sale are handled by the same hands.
The three readiness assessments are free. The Business Readiness Assessment is from $3,000 and is credited in full toward your engagement if we take your business to market within 12 months. Strategic Advisory is $4,000 per month, month to month, with 30 days notice. Each step stands on its own, and none obligates you to the next.
No. We work alongside your CPA, attorney, and financial advisor rather than in place of them, and we bring them in when the plan calls for it.
That is the most common place to start. A conversation costs nothing, and you will leave it knowing which step is yours.
